$1 KUENDA R5 KUDZOKA
So today as I'm getting used to I had already booked my ticket for a seat at the magnificent HOT SEAT (pakadoma) in one of the Kombis at 4th bus terminus.
My destination is one of the affluent, quiet and neat lawns lane space in the Northen part of Harare. Not Borrowdale per say but an area or is it a Road which runs parallel the CHANCELLOR AVENUE/BORROWDALE ROAD.
AFTER my 'ride' was full we had to redeem our tickets or rather pay the tokens and i politely parted with my golden centered R5 as I was already trying to comfortably relax on my seat as I leaned forward since the guy I was leaning on seemed to overpower me.
THE reason I'm on this ride FACEBOOK is for now I couldn't manage the $1 you know...but the rest to my assumption the other 18 could happily do. But I was to be proven wrong.
Amongst my fellow passenger was a middle-aged man who politely paid R5 whilst seating on the paded seats and the conductor thought twas going to be a small job.
This fellow politely asked WHY HE HAD TO PAY A DOLLAR FOR A TRIP THAT HE HAD PAID R5 WHEN HE WAS GETTING INTO TOWN? WHAT HAD CHANGED THE MOMENTS THAT HE HAD JUST GOT INTO TOWN AND WAS GOING BACK? HAS THE FUEL PRICE ROSE? HAS THE POLICE HIKED THEIR TICKET FEES OR WHAT SUDDEN CHANGE HAD HAPPENED?
HE continued his Inquisition whilst drawing no answers from the conductor. The driver muttered something whilst speeding away at 80km an hour that its not only about the fuel.
WHAT interested me most is the fact that we have since left the HYPER-INFLATION period which characterized the era of the ZIM dollar.
In a country where everything else is deemed rising at low rate, where those in the lower grades have their salaries or wages not increasing after being gazetted in 2009 when we shifted into the multi-currency.
In an economy where almost everyone is selling something, there are other still benefiting. I'm no good commentator of the economy, but when you have the head of ZIMRA and RBZ calling for a wage FREEZE you have trigger happy touts, conductors and drivers changing fees just because it a return trip.
FOR them they are covered because they are STAFF, they can board any kombi for free. They forget that its their mother, father, brother or sister whom they are milking.
What is the reason of charging R5 from 5am to 8am and the rest of the day its a $1. What is the reason of such an assault on the public, just because we do not revolt.
The fellow That got me thinking started to talk of political risings and demonstrations, which at that moment he almost succeeded as the whole passengers, ME EXCLUDED were demanding their R5 back.
Luckily for the conductor or is it bad luck for the passenger, the MAIN ACTOR and INSTIGATOR, whom i give credit for enjoying His ride, board off at THE BRIDGE.
All of a sudden the Kombi was in a hush and we were back to our thoughts, and maybe figuring how we were to sprnd the day. In essence "munhu wese anga akufunga nhamo dzake".
Such is our attitude to life and situations, especially among Zimbabweans.
YES hatidi hondo, hatidi mhirizhonga as OLIVER MTKUDZI sang. I do agree with Him. you just wonder where the relevant authorities are.
At times you hear the Kombi crew boasting that even the CITY FATHERS endorses their plan.
MOTA dze R5 dzaenda, its time for a $1.
I rest my case
$1 $1 VAINONA, KWAMUJOOO, SAN VALLEY, EXTENSION.
